The former Campbell’s abattoir
facility at Bairnsdale has become a victim of the
changing directions in agriculture affecting rural
Australia. This once state of the art facility could
be started up tomorrow if the numbers of livestock
in the region were to be available.
However this facility could have
a new future with the advent of developments in the
aquaculture industry. Farms in Gippsland are proving
that commercial species such as Murray cod, jade
perch, eels, native bass, silver perch, barramundi,
yabbies, etc can be successfully grown in the region
in enclosed recirculation systems.
