Queensland's aquaculture industry is a growing and vital
component of the State's primary industry sector, now worth
more than AUD 9 billion to the state's economy, says
Minister for Primary Industries and Rural Communities Henry
Palaszczuk. Speaking at
the Aquaculture Association of Queensland's annual
conference Mr Palaszczuk said: "Queensland has the potential

major supplier of white flesh fish products both locally and
internationally."
He also told the conference
that the health benefits of farmed fish are beyond doubt or
dispute with many native fish species offering among the
highest levels of Omega-3.
Aquaculture is one of the
fastest-growing new primary industries throughout Australia,
expanding at the rate of about 14 per cent per year, with
more than 60 aquatic species now being farmed including
pearl oysters, oysters, mussels, barramundi, prawns,
salmonids, crayfish and algae. As one of the country's main
producers, the demand for Queensland produced hatchery
fingerlings is strong throughout the entire country making
the fingerling sector a growth industry for the state.
The
Department of Primary Industries
has worked closely with the Aquaculture Association of
Queensland to promote the development of state's aquaculture
industry - and was a major sponsor of the conference.
