Federal Minister for Forestry
and Conservation, and Minister responsible for Commonwealth
fisheries, Senator Ian Macdonald, today approved $200,000 from
the Government’s Natural Heritage Trust to ensure Australia’s
network of fisheries coordinators continues until July 2003.
Senator Macdonald said the small, but important network of
coordinators, plays a vital role in the Trust’s
fisheries-related projects, and in implementing the Government’s
Fisheries Action Program (FAP).
“They also provide fisheries-related support to community
groups, and manage the interface between regional, State and
Commonwealth fisheries agencies,” he said.
“At present, a coordinator is based in the fisheries agencies
of each State and Territory. Today’s funding announcement will
ensure the network, which was due to wind up this September,
will continue with its important work till July 2003.
“It is vital that this key network is not lost in the Natural
Heritage Trust’s transition to its second phase. And the funding
will help ensure FAP is finalised in the first half of 2003.”
Senator Macdonald said the fisheries coordinators would also:
- play an important role in ensuring community access the
Government’s landmark Envirofund;
- help ensure fisheries issues are integrated into Natural
Heritage Trust regional plans; and
- help develop State proposals for funding under the Trust’s
national component.
“The Federal Government recognises the important contribution
the fisheries coordinators are making, particularly in the way
they help communities become involved in project planning and
implementation,” Senator Macdonald said.
“This is one of the Government’s key expectations for the
Trust’s second phase to have greater community involvement in
regional natural resource management.”
