Ocean Waves Produce Mussel Ropes

Ocean Wave Seafoods of Avalon in Victoria, have become the state’s first multi-species shellfish hatchery with seeded mussel ropes being the first commercially produced ropes in Victoria for the mussel industry.

Ocean Wave was established 4 years ago, primarily to produce abalone, which reached maturity late last year.  Mr Peter Rankin, general manger said the 360 ropes, each with 15,000 mussel spat, was the first installment in a contract to supply 7500 ropes.

The seeded ropes will now allow mussel farmers to produce shellfish all year and will provide a huge boost for the local aquaculture industry.

Mr Rankin said, “We are able to induce the mature mussel to reproduce before the natural spawning season, we are able to provide mussel farmers the opportunity to set their lines early and thus harvest earlier than would otherwise be possible”.

Mr Rankin also said, “The mussel industry currently harvests most months of the year but often find their stocks running short during the June to October period, as the harvest of one year’s crop finishes and the next begins.  The introduction of seeded mussel ropes will potentially enable a consistent year-round harvest”.
