Consumers spend more on seafood

Spending on food and seafood is rising - in contrast to a decline in general household expenditure in Japan. Figures show that while there has been a remarkable drop in the price of seafood recently, much more is being sold and consumers are spending more on it than they were at the same time last year.

Government figures for May show the average home spent 2.7 per cent less during the month than in May last year and 3.3 per cent less than in April this year.

But food purchases were up 1.8 per cent on May last year and up 5.8 per cent on April 2002 to an average of JPY 72,912.

Fish and shellfish accounted for JPY 8,339 of the average monthly food expenditure, up one per cent on the same month last year and up five per cent from April this year. Of this, JPY 5,250 was spent on fresh seafood items, which was a rise of three per cent on the previous year and on April 2002.

Spending on salted and dried fish items was JPY 1,495, which was down two per cent on May 2001 but a jump of 7.6 per cent on April this year. Fish paste items, such as kamaboko and chikuwa, fell to JPY 695, down three percent on the same month last year and down one percent from April this year.
