People interested in becoming part of Queensland’s
burgeoning aquaculture industry are encouraged to attend the
annual Aquaculture Association of Queensland (AAQ)
Conference at Hervey Bay in a fortnight.
Queensland Fisheries Service
extension officer Rod Cheetham said the conference, being
held from August 16 to 18, would benefit both current and
potential industry members.
AAQ concentrates on
freshwater finfish and hatcheries dealing predominantly with
native species for stocking and aquaculture production as
well as native and exotic ornamentals.
Mr Cheetham said as
freshwater fish production in Queensland continued to expand
it was timely that producers had an opportunity to get
together and exchange information.
He said in recent years the
Queensland Fisheries Service had been a major contributor to
the conference and would continue to maintain a close
involvement with the event.
Mr Cheetham said two major
drawcards from Victoria had already been secured for the
conference.
“Brett Ingram is a senior
scientist from the Marine and Freshwater Resources
Institute. Brett will be speaking about Murray cod
production. Roger Camm who manages Australian Aquaculture
Products, uses a Hesy recirculation aquaculture system to
produce Murray cod and eels. Both these speakers are sure
to generate a great deal of interest,” he said.
“Leading DPI researchers and
extension personnel will also attend the conference with the
latest in research and development findings.” Mr Cheetham
said.
He said other speakers
include Dr Adrian Collins who will detail the development of
innovative and sustainable aquaculture systems.
The conference will be held
at the Kondari Resort in Hervey Bay. For more information
