E-business, back to the future

"Companies fail to realise the Internet’s power to totally reform every part of the supply chain and internal organisation," Europe’s leading futurist, Dr Patrick Dixon, said this at his keynote presentation "Take hold of the future or the future will take hold of you" at the AquaVision 2002 conference in Stavanger yesterday.

One of Dixon’s topics was past e-business errors where companies’ attitudes towards internet were:

  • 1996 "The Net is irrelevant - spend nothing"
  • 1999 "We’re late! Spend everything!"
  • 2001 "The Net is unimportant - spend as little as possible"

"Each error caught companies off-balance and led directly to the next over-reaction. The next error will be to fail to realise the Net’s power to totally reform every part of the supply chain and internal organisation. Too many still see the Net as websites and sales brochures," Dixon said.

Dixon also spoke of trends. The aquaculture industry will be affected by many different complex trends over the coming years, all operating together, sometimes in unexpected ways and producing changes in the industry that may be very rapid indeed.

"The ability of the aquaculture industry to foresee and react to these trends and changes is of vital importance to the future development and success of the sector," Dixon explained.

Dr Dixon is a fellow of the Centre for Management Development at the London Business School, the author of 10 books and Chairman of Global Change Ltd. He advises Fortune 500 company boards and senior teams on the impact of a wide range of global trends.
