Aquacultural seafood
trail for Eyre Peninsula |
|
by Suzy Grosser
Tourism Eyre Peninsula is preparing to launch what's thought to
be Australia's first aquaculture and seafood trail. From
seahorses to oysters to abalone the trail will give visitors
first-hand insight into each industry. The Eyre Peninsula might
be the seafood and aquaculture hub of South Australia but if
you're a visitor there's little chance to see it. Shaun de
Bruin, of Tourism Eyre Peninsula, says many visitors knock on
shed doors to have a peek but this causes problems for operators
because of staff being taken away from work. But Mr de Bruin
says the trail will help solve the problem and give visitors a
chance to see what they're looking for. "Each attraction will be
different, but we hope that across the board there'll be three
of four different types of experiences or components, to their
visit. First they'll be guided through the story of the species
or the industry that they're looking at...and if possible
tastings, sales and merchandising. At the moment we're still
talking with people and planning and developing, we're hoping
that most land-based aquaculture will be able to be accessed.
There are no other aquacultural seafood trails, that we are
aware of, in Australia and because the Eyre Peninsula is unique
in how much seafood and aquaculture it does have and the
diversity of it, it's a real point of difference for us."
