The Fisheries Research and Development
Corporation (FRDC) board of directors will hold their board meeting in
Darwin on 23 May in conjunction with the 3rd International Recreational
Fishing Conference being held from 20-24 May.
FRDC Executive Director, Mr Peter Dundas-Smith
said FRDC has $2.2 million dollars invested in ongoing fisheries R&D
projects in the Northern Territory.
"A new project, particularly relevant to
recreational fishers, will assess the survival rate of barramundi
released by anglers after capture. The study will assist in identifying
if there is a need to improve catch-and-release techniques for
significant recreational species.
"Another project is developing commercial
production systems for the farming of mud crab, another key species for
the Northern Territory. The project will document the farming process
for inclusion in a manual for commercial production of mud crabs.
The Board will use the opportunity to
meet fishing industry representatives, researchers and government
officials and familiarise themselves with the local industry.
"It is essential for the Board to meet in
conjunction with such a significant international fishing conference.
The recreational fishing industry is an important stakeholder to the
FRDC," said Mr Dundas-Smith.
The Board will tour various commercial
fishing operations and aquaculture sites around Darwin. An industry
gathering, which gives representatives from all sectors of the industry
an opportunity to meet with the board, will also be held at the Carlton
Hotel at 6.30pm on 22 May. Media are invited to attend.
