| Researchers
have announced the discovery of a gene that is said to be necessary
for the normal growth of fish.
The
Fisheries Research Agency working
in tandem with the
Japan Science Foundation and
National Institute of Genetics has
succeeded in isolating the gene that triggers fused somites, the
cause of which has puzzled researchers for many years.
The study group used zebrafish in the
experiment. Regular build-up of somites, which later form the
vertebrae and flesh of the fish, is indispensable for normal growth.
Details of the discovery are to be published in the US science
magazine Nature on 10 June. |
