Punjab aquaculture gets a boost

The Punjab Fisheries Department is offering an incentive package to encourage and improve fish farming in the private sector.

Punjab Fisheries Director-General, Dr Mohammad Ayub, told FIS.com that a number of facilities are already available for fish farmers throughout the province, including a 32-acre farm at Farooqabad in the Sheikhupura district for producing Chinese carp.

Other incentives include soft-term loans, canal water at agricultural rates, bulldozers at highly subsidised rates, leased land, quality fish seed at nominal rates, free advice and guidance and free refresher courses.

Dr Ayub said the number of fish farms in the private sector is increasing rapidly as it is one of the most profitable investments and also because fish is growing in popularity for its taste, nutritional value and low cholesterol levels.

He said several hatcheries and nurseries are currently using modern equipment and techniques to rear high quality fingerlings for fish species commonly known as rohu, mori, thaila, silver carp and grass carp.

The Fisheries Department has set up 14 sales points in various parts of the province to provide disease-free, high quality, fast growing fish seed to private farmers. Each district also has a special advice centre to guide and educate fish farmers in the latest techniques for maximum fish production, effective disease control and feeding.

Scientists at the Fisheries Research Centre in Manawan are also working to develop a new variety of fast growing fish seed to get maximum yield per acre, he said.
