Two more species successfully bred in Cádiz

The Marine Species and Aquaculture Research Centre (CICEM) in Santa María, Cádiz, is working on an innovative research programme to breed two marine species, borriquete (Plectorhynchus mediterraneus) and redbanded seabream (Pagrus auriga).

CICEM is studying fishery resources, product identification with PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) techniques, and selective breeding, among other tasks.

But the centre's current research is focussed on improving, developing and diversifying aquaculture.

According to CICEM the viability of these two species – in terms of quality, price and farming potential - represents an important milestone and raises hopes for future aquaculture development. It is good news not only for Spanish aquaculture, but also for aquaculture worldwide.

There is little known about borriquete but the centre has managed to farm 1,500 specimens through a polyculture system in marshes, to assess viability and growth levels in this environment. Another group of fish is at the pre-fattening stage for later transfer to sea cages.

Although there is more information on the biology of redbanded seabream in its natural environment, efforts to reproduce this species in captivity had not been successful until now.

CICEM scientists achieved the first viable embryos in September and confirmed that more than 50,000 viable eggs are being produced daily. There are also 10-day-old larvae, which are feeding normally. These larvae will be used to repopulate their natural environment.
