Turkey meets one-third of farm fish consumption of Europe

IZMIR - Turkey meets 40 thousand tons of 120 thousand tons of consumption of fish cultivated in farms in European Union (EU)countries.

Aquaculture and Water Products Association Chairman Osman Tatar told a correspondent on Sunday that around 600 thousand tons of fish was caught in Turkish coasts last year.

Tatar said that there was a decrease in fish caught in Turkey and measures should be taken to prevent the decrease.

Fish Promotion Group Chairman Beyhan Tosun said that around 83 thousand tons of fish was cultivated in farms constructed in the sea in Turkey.

Tosun noted that 38-40 thousand tons of gilt-head bream and sea bass were exported to EU countries and stated that 45 thousand tons of salmon trout was sent to EU.

Turkey was ranked the second following Greece in countries selling the most sea products to EU countries, Tosun added.
