Danes look at cod farming

The decline in natural cod stocks and latest developments in aquaculture technology has revived interest in cod farming in Denmark. The aim of a pilot project is to produce 100 tonnes of cod per year in land-based facilities in Hanstholm, northern Denmark. This volume is planned to increase to 20,000 tonnes per year in 2010.

The Hanstholm company Danish Cod will carry out the production of cod larva and fry and the actual farming, according to the AkvaTorsk website.

Recent developments in culture techniques suggest that there might be a potential for a successful commercial enterprise for this species. A pilot project funded by The Directorate for Food, Fisheries and Agri Business was initiated 1 June 2001 in order to investigate the potential for farming cod in Denmark and to gather all the facts on the latest technological and scientific developments in the field.

The project is financed partially by the EU through the nationally regulated FIUF funds.
