Mussel Regulating Council, the
Galician Mussel Producers’ Organisation (OPMEGA), the
Galician Mussel Association (AGAME) and the North
Federation.
The Council has decided allow the transitory installation
of more ropes in each floating farm, but only for mussels
that are smaller than the commercial size. The aim is to
prevent the mussels from becoming detached – when after
about six months they measures between 4.5 and 5.5
centimetres and are transferred to additional ropes so the
weight is evenly distributed and the mussels are prevented
from falling to the seabed - and ensure future harvests,
writes Faro de Galicia.
The
Council’s Inspection and Surveillance Services will be
responsible for monitoring all movement of mussels and
spat and according to a press release sector
representatives have also agreed to carry out a joint
surveillance to help the Council.
