Reports highlight big
growth for SA aquaculture |
|
The South Australian Government says the state's already
booming aquaculture industry could almost double in size
during the next three years.
The Government has released two reports from the Seafood
Industry Development Board which point to a projected 85 per
cent increase in production by 2004.
The figures also bode well for wild-catch aquaculture
ventures in the south-east.
State Fisheries Minister Paul Holloway says it is vital that
South Australia capitalises on the growing demand for its
seafood.
"We have had some very good success in the past in terms of
the growth of the aquaculture industry," he said.
"It's really developed from an industry that was worth less
than $1 million a year 10 years ago now to be worth
somewhere in the vicinity of $300 million a year, so there's
been very considerable growth.
"But to ensure that that growth continues we do need to look
carefully at the prospects for the future and that's what
these reports have done." |
