Sector aims for USD 84.2 million in new investments

With the aquaculture and fisheries expo Fishow taking place on 3 and 4 September, the investment and promotion agency ProInversión is making every effort to showcase the country as an attractive option for foreign investment.

The agency has announced opportunities in 59 private sector fishing and aquaculture projects representing a total investment of USD 84.2 million, most of which will benefit shrimp, mollusc, seaweed and trout production.

Recovery of the shrimp sector comes top of the list, with USD 17.1 million earmarked for 10 different projects to boost investment in this commercially valuable species. Mollusc takes second place with investments of USD 6.4 million destined to five separate projects.

Included in the package are 11 trout production projects, three initiatives for tilapia, and two for seaweed, making up a total of USD 4 million.

ProInversión executive director Alberto Pasco Font said efforts were focused on eliminating any bureaucratic restraints and barriers that might hinder investments. As the newspaper Gestión points out, the agency was set up to facilitate both the generation of projects and contacts with investors. In this capacity, it has collaborated in the privatisation of public sector assets in various parts of the industry.

Fifteen of the projects will be featured at the Fishow expo in Lima. The event is a joint initiative with Prompex for promoting investment in the aquaculture sector - especially shrimp production, products containing concentrated proteins and Peruvian scallop - as well as increasing the variety of seafood available, writes Expreso Perú.

The event will include an investment projects fair, a business conference for delegates from China, Spain, France, Brazil, Switzerland and Italy, as well as seminars on frozen and fresh chilled fish, cephalopods, frozen shellfish and frozen molluscs, canned fish, and fishmeal and fish oil.
