The deadline for public comment on the
“Marine National Parks Draft Management Strategy” is rapidly
approaching on the 10th October 2002.
The Parks Victoria website located at
www.parkweb.vic.gov.au provides an overview of the
strategy and downloadable copies in Adobe PDF format.
According to the Parks Victoria website the
draft strategy has been prepared after an extensive review
of national and international best practice approaches for
the management of marine protected areas. The draft strategy
has also adopted the principles of integrated coastal zone
management which is a requirement of the Victorian
Coastal Strategy (2002) for managing Victoria’s marine
and coastal environment.
The scope of the draft Strategy has been
prepared by Parks Victoria and the Marine National Parks
and Marine Sanctuaries Reference Group which is
represented by over 15 community organisations and interest
groups which have a significant interest in ensuring the
marine environment is managed sustainably. Emphasis in the
draft strategy has been placed on appreciating the diversity
of values associated with highly protected marine national
parks, and on key issues facing managers, which will need to
be addressed through statewide objectives and strategies.
The Parks Victoria website also says that the
draft strategy has been prepared to provide clear and
consistent direction for Parks Victoria’s planning and
management programs over the next 7 to 10 years. It applies
to all highly protected marine national parks and marine
sanctuaries in Victoria.
The draft strategy sets out statewide
objectives and associated strategies to promote coordinated
management planning, resourcing, operations and research.
Wherever applicable, objectives and strategies in this draft
document have been adopted to complement or implement
existing State policy and management initiatives.
The parks will be proclaimed on 16 November
2002. From this date Parks Victoria will be responsible for
the physical establishment and day-to-day management of
Marine National Parks and Marine Sanctuaries.
