The country’s overall fish
supply has been dwindling as a result of aging production
equipment and the difficult economic situation, so the
government agreed the way to go was to boost aquaculture.
North Korea has been
costructing more than 100 hectares of farming space in each
Do regions since the mid-1990s.
The most successfully farmed
fresh water fish is tropical catfish and because the catfish
is an omnivore farmers can easily obtain feed. In addition
the catfish is fairly hardy and resistant to disease,
leading to high production levels and because of the short
growth cylce, the tropical catfish is said to be a high
value comodity.
According to offical figures,
the average consumption of tropical catfish in the city of
Pyong Yang alone has surpassed one ton per day.
