The Sergipe government is
introducing measures to encourage aquaculture
development in the region, which includes a new
initiative to boost fingerling production.
Under this initiative, the
authorities have signed a new technical and operational
agreement for Copáqua - one of the region's most
important aquaculture cooperatives - to supervise
fingerling and fish feed production. |

The aim is to produce five
million fingerlings every month - of species such as
tambaqui, tilapia and tambacu - at the Soloncy Moura farm in
Pacatuba, which at present produces only 50,000 fingerlings
per month.
The Soloncy Moura farm will
supply fingerlings of local species from the São Francisco
river to all interested farmers who are not yet members of
Copáqua. The farm will also develop fish feed production and
experiment with new reproduction techniques and species for
farming.
During the 10-year agreement the farm will be managed by the
Agriculture Secretariat, which will appoint a technical
adviser to assist Copáqua specialists with the assessement
and supervision of fingerling production, reports Mercado
da Pesca.
Copáqua President Marcus
Lemos said the cooperative also plans to launch a fish
processing plant in February 2003 that will produce three
tonnes of fish a day.
The plant will supply
processed products such as fish balls, rolls, fishmeal,
fillets, burgers, paté, and sardine, among others.
This range of products is
targeted at an "existing and fast-growing market," he said.
