on September 16, which will give members of the rock
lobster industry the opportunity to attend both
conferences. The Women’s Industry Network Seafood
Community (WINSC) will also host their conference in
on Wednesday September 17, association with Seafood
Directions, making September 2003, in Perth, a date
for a truly inclusive seafood industry event.
Mr Terry Moran,
Chairman, Australian Seafood Council said the purpose
of Seafood Directions 2003 is to examine issues from
both a national and international perspective that
impact on the industry, to stimulate debate, explore
new initiatives and to set strategic directions for
the future.
“Ultimately both an
assessment of the current status and a guide for
future action will be developed and compared with past
achievements so progress can be monitored.
“In particular we
encourage fishers and aquaculturists to join those
from processing, exporting, wholesaling and retailing
companies and restaurateurs, fisheries and
environmental agencies, scientists and researchers,
government representatives and industry organizations
to participate in the conference,” said Mr Moran.
WAFIC Executive Officer
and Chairman of the Program Committee for Seafood
Directions 2003, Guy Leyland, said the program had
been designed to interest, inspire and motivate
delegates who operate throughout the seafood industry
supply chain.
“The theme “Beyond
Sustainability – Taking The Lead” will explore the
efforts of rights holders through cooperative and
individual action, to gain increased control over the
use of fishing right assets.
“Topics covered will
include: self-management, industry structure, family
succession planning, trade, resource sharing, creating
alliances and economic transitions. We will announce
key speakers in the coming weeks, “ said Mr Leyland.
