NSW Fisheries is inviting the community to discover
the Wakool experimental fish farm at an Open Day on
Thursday, April 17, the Director of NSW Fisheries,
Steve Dunn, said today.
Mr Dunn said visitors will see first-hand how the
research centre is using six specially designed 500
square metre ponds to grow black tiger prawns and
other marine species in saline groundwater.
“This is a rare opportunity to learn more about saline
aquaculture and taste fish and prawns grown on-site
using the latest fish farming techniques.
“The farm is conducting valuable research on the
growing of marine and salt-tolerant species such as
snapper, mulloway, silver perch and black tiger prawns
in saline groundwater.
“So far, the research has shown these species have
survived and grown at similar rates to those of
traditional coastal aquaculture.”
Mr Dunn said $1 million has been put into this
two-year project, the largest aquaculture study to be
undertaken by the Government in western NSW, with the
support of Murray Irrigation Limited.
“If the new technology is proven, we will have a new
and reliable seafood supply for our markets,” he said.
“This will take pressure off wild fish stocks and lead
to more job opportunities where they are needed.”
