SARDI MEDIA RELEASE -
Wednesday, 5
February, 2003
A long-term research and
development vision for Australia’s expanding Yellowtail
Kingfish industry will be the focus of an industry workshop
in Whyalla this Friday, February 7, 2003.
Bringing together industry
stakeholders to identify and give priority to their research
and development needs, the workshop will be attended by new
and prospective farming groups and representatives from a
range of funding agencies, research groups and regulatory
bodies.
"Anticipated outcomes include
improving communication within and between industry and
associated groups, the development of a research steering
committee and the development of a strategic research and
development industry plan,” said scientist Wayne Hutchinson
of the
South Australian Research and
Development Institute (SARDI).
Mr Hutchinson said SARDI, which
is hosting the meeting, had recognised the industry’s great
potential and that it would require focused research and
development to ensure a prosperous and sustainable future.
SARDI, with the support of key
industry groups, has received
Fisheries Research and Development
Corporation (FRDC) funding to determine research
priorities and develop the research and development plan.
Mr Hutchinson said the industry
had expanded in recent years to an expected production level
of about 2000 tonnes in 2002 – ‘03.
Friday’s workshop follows last
night’s (Tuesday, February 4) public meeting hosted by the
Whyalla Economic Development Board,
during which Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Minister Paul
Holloway confirmed the State Government’s commitment to a
sustainable aquaculture industry in South Australia.
Mr Holloway announced that
PIRSA (Primary
Industries and Resources South Australia),
had joined forces with the FRDC
to undertake research underpinning the future development of
aquaculture in South Australia
While the recently announced
program is primarily focused on industry management
strategies, it is expected that its priorities will
complement the outcomes of Friday’s industry workshop.
