“People within and outside the industry had identified that
its fragmentation was one of the main problems.
“A study of the short, medium
and long term viability of the industry completed last year
supported that view.
“Today’s announcement that
the two big players are getting together addresses that
problem head-on by creating Australia’s biggest salmon
producer.
“It will give the new Tassal
the economies of scale to provide long-term surety for its
630 workers, many suppliers and not the least its investors.
“The move puts the industry
on the front foot and in a much better place to realise its
full potential for the Tasmanian economy.”
Mr Green said he would ensure
he is briefed by the receiver manager in the lead up to the
planned efforts to sell the combined company starting next
month, according to the press release.
“I want to ensure the
interests of the current workforce are treated seriously in
that process.”
