Salmon industry rationalisation welcomed

The Minister for Primary Industries, Water and Environment, Bryan Green, has welcomed the announced acquisition of Nortas by Tassal.

Mr Green said in a press release that he was impressed by the progress the company had made since appointing receiver managers in June last year.

“People within and outside the industry had identified that its fragmentation was one of the main problems.

“A study of the short, medium and long term viability of the industry completed last year supported that view.

“Today’s announcement that the two big players are getting together addresses that problem head-on by creating Australia’s biggest salmon producer.

“It will give the new Tassal the economies of scale to provide long-term surety for its 630 workers, many suppliers and not the least its investors.

“The move puts the industry on the front foot and in a much better place to realise its full potential for the Tasmanian economy.”

Mr Green said he would ensure he is briefed by the receiver manager in the lead up to the planned efforts to sell the combined company starting next month, according to the press release.

“I want to ensure the interests of the current workforce are treated seriously in that process.”
