The SEAfeeds workshop will bring together 30 invited expert
delegates representing a wide range of interests in the
aquaculture industry and associated areas of concern in open
debate. In addition to helping policy makers and advisers to
make informed decisions, the workshop aims to achieve areas
of consensus regarding the sustainability of feed for
aquaculture. Clear communication of current workfrom the
aquaculture, fisheries and feed industries, food
certification, and environmental and research organisations.
In addition to summarising current thinking and research on
future sustainable feeds for the industry, the workshop will
seek agreement on sustainability criteria, and consensus on
some of the key areas of debate. The output should serve as
a solid foundation for and discussion between stakeholders
increases the likelihood that the debate will move forward
in a constructive manner and identify according to a variety
of sustainability criteria the best future policy for feed
within the global aquaculture industry.
Providing a forum to facilitate
these discussions between farmers, feed producers,
environmentalists, fishmeal manufacturers, sustainability
criteria experts and labelling /consumer organisations
provides the best opportunity to achieve meaningful progress
in the debate. This will also enable future research needs
to be identified and provide an invaluable function in
steering the aquaculture feeds industry in the future. more
informed policy, strategy and decision making, on the part
of government and the industry itself. It should also serve
to highlight critical areas for further research.
Although the working group
will be limited to 30 expert delegates, the organisers are
keen to provide a forum for others to express views and
opinions and follow the debate.
As a result there will be an associated Internet debate.
Steering group members and key note speakers will kick off
the debates and contributions from interested parties are
welcomed. In addition the proceedings of the workshop will
be published on-line.
The workshop will be held at
the Stirling Management Centre on 8th and 9th April 2003.
