Vietnam’s fisheries sector is aiming
for a 38 percent increase in exports in the first two months
of this year following last year’s strong performance.
The sector expects to earn nearly US$24
million from exports by the end of February. In January
alone, it earned US$120 million, up 11.6 percent
year-on-year.

It also has a plan for aquaculture
development for the next eight years, setting itself an
export target of 3.4 million tonnes by 2010. The target
includes two million tonnes of farmed fish and shellfish
that will help raise seafood export revenue to about US$4.5
billion.
To achieve the target, at least US$2.93
billion will be spent on expanding the country’s rearing
areas and fishing capacity. Of the sum, US$1.9 billion is to
be earmarked for shrimp and fish farming and nearly US$194.8
million for further development of the seafood processing
industry,The sector and foreign partners have 17 projects
worth US$44 million ready for implementation this year.
The Ministry of Fisheries and local fish farms are making
concerted efforts to ensure quality of seafood for export. |
