Aquaculture council speaks out over kingfish claims

The South Australian Aquaculture Council has hit back at claims about the number of kingfish escapes, saying recreational fishers should look to themselves for damaging fish stocks.

The SA Recreational Fishing Advisory Council (SARFAC) says economic damage from escapee kingfish could soon be costing the state more than the industry generates.

But Aquaculture Council chairman Bruce Zippel says recreational fishers should start taking a look at their own impact.

"Recently released figures are clearly showing that there's an increased recreational catch in South Australia over the last six years and there seems to be no public releases from SARFAC as to how they are going to deal with that issue...instead they are focusing on what's happening in other industries," he said.
