The Governor of Queensland,
Major-General Peter Arnison, has been given a briefing on
Queensland’s aquaculture industry and associated research
during a recent tour of the Department of Primary
Industry'sBribie Island Aquaculture Research Centre (BIARC).
DPI Chief Scientist Dr Joe
Baker said the visit was conducted after he had issued an
invitation for the governor to view the BIARC complex.
Dr Baker said he knew of the
Governors significant interest in aquaculture and had
advised him that the Bribie Island research centre would be
an ideal location for a briefing on the latest research
programs and developments in Queensland aquaculture.
Dr Baker said Major General
Arnison and Mrs Barbara Arnison last year had visited the
commercial aquaculture facilities at Seafarm, Cardwell, in
North Queensland. At that time Dr Baker had suggested that
they should also tour BIARC.
DPI program
leader-Aquaculture, John Robertson said that the governor
and his wife made the informal visit to the Bribie Island
Research Station on Monday, 17 February.
He said during a
comprehensive tour of the complex they were given an
overview of the latest Queensland research programs and
technical advances involving commercial prawn production,
sea scallops, Moreton Bay Bugs, silver perch and integrated
agriculture and aquaculture farming systems, soft shell and
blue swimmer crabs, bioremediation of aquaculture waste,
genetics and biotechnology.
“The Governor has extensive
knowledge of Queensland industries and we were able to
update him on the rapid expansion of the aquaculture
industry and the latest programs aiming to assist industry
development.” Mr Robertson said.
