New fish farms and processing facilities for Campeche

Three new marine aquaculture facilities are being set up to farm croaker, butterfish and octopus under a pilot scheme to boost production and create jobs.

Two new freezing plants are also being converted to provide value added fishery products as part of the "Transforming Campeche" programme.

Campeche's Business Coordination Council is asking the secretariats of Social Development and Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food. (Sagarpa) to provide MXP 10 million to fund both projects, reports El Sur de Campeche.

The Business Coordination Council unveiled the projects at a press conference, saying the objective was to "support the social sector and reinforce almost one thousand direct and indirect jobs, with a sustainable development project and guaranteed sales on local, national and international markets."

Council spokesman Roberto Sales Rosado pointed out that the freezing plants were of particular interest for local businesses, which would be able to offer a wider range of value added products.

MXP 4 million would be earmarked to finance two plants initially - one in Campeche and the other in Ciudad del Carmen but the overall project includes plans for restructuring 9 freezing plants in all. The Campeche plant would be dedicated to octopus and shrimp and the Ciudad del Carmen plant would process Atlantic seabob, he said.

The first phase of the project needs MXP 6 million to set up the three coastal fish farms to grow marine species in Punta Xen, Villa Madero and Seybaplaya. The farms would initially produce around 25 tonnes per year, but each farm may eventually produce up to 40 tonnes, he said.

Both the fish farm project and the freezing plants are part of a project promoted by the Business Coordination Council, the Transforming Campeche programme, Sedesol, Sagarpa, Icatcam, the Two per cent on Pay Roll Trust and the social sector.

According to Sales Rosado the projects are complementary in that they will both serve to add value to fisheries production and sustainable aquaculture would help to keep processing plants operating.
