Trout farm granted organic status

La Ferme Aquacole du Planturel has become the first French trout farm to be granted organic status by the certifying body Ecocert. Yearly output is expected to reach 80 tonnes. The farm produces trout with white flesh to distinguish it from salmon or standard production, non-organic trout, reports Aquamedia.

The farm is run by producers and processors Jean Marc Pirlot and Daniel Verdier, whose farm is situated in the Ariège department of France at the foot of the Pyrenees. The rainbow trout are reared in floating cages on the 600ha lake Lac de Montbel, which benefits from water renewed every year from melting snow from the mountains.

The farm will rear 80 tonnes annually, against a 100-tonne authorised maximum. The rearing density is limited to 35kg/cu m and the rearing cycle is two months longer than normal. The fish are fed on feed containing protein and marine-based lipids with cereals, some of which are organic, but no colourant.

The farm produces trout with white flesh to distinguish it from salmon or standard production, non-organic trout, and avoids producing large specimens, as this market segment is dominated by Norwegian product.
