Black tiger prawn harvest offers new industry hope

The Queensland Department of Primary Industries (DPI) says the initial commercial harvest of black tiger prawns raised in bore water has offered hope of a developing new industry.

The trial was conducted at Bauple, north of Gympie in the state's south-east, providing chefs and consumers with large, high quality, fresh prawns with a sweet flavour, distinctive colour and firm texture.

The DPI's fisheries biologist, Dr Adrian Collins, says consumer response to the first harvest has led to the grower planning to increase production by expanding his ponds.

Dr Collins says the trial holds great hope for farmers looking to diversify.

"Well, the first trial was done with a local grower there and we set up a series of small ponds and we harvested in mid-January," he said.

"We got the equivalent to around three tonnes a hectare, we think we can do a bit better than that, our survival was very good and the opportunity for a high yield and better returns are there, but we need to do a bit of work on that."
