Marron Workshop To Reveal
Latest Research |
|
Marron farmers will soon have the opportunity
to learn first hand the latest research on
achieving the best possible survival rates for the
popular crustacean.
Researchers from the Department of Fisheries will
conduct a marron farming workshop and field day at
the Pemberton Freshwater Research Centre on
Saturday 5 April.
Aquaculture Research Supervisor Dr Greg Maguire
said the title of the workshop was ‘how to get
excellent survival rates in ponds and in the
shed’.
Dr Maguire said the day was designed to assist
marron farmers throughout the South West achieve
maximum returns from their marron farming
ventures.
“With more people involved in marron farming (250
or more licence holders) than any other form of
aquaculture in WA, workshops such as this play an
important role is distributing the latest research
information to aquaculturalists,” he said.
Dr Maguire said tiny juveniles that were stocked
12 months ago at the Pemberton Freshwater Research
Facility and harvested during the summer months
had shown excellent survival rates.
He said key factors to this success were:
· Careful handling of marron during stocking and
harvesting;
· Use of netting, electric fences and water
filtration to protect marron from predators such
as birds and water rats;
· Adequate amounts of water through recycling the
discharge
· Use of refuges in the ponds
· Good pond preparation; and
· Keeping harvest marron ‘wet’ in the shed after
harvesting.
Registration and pre-payment can be made through
the Department’s website at
