BC Salmon Farmers Launch
“Aquaculture Feeds Families” Program |
|
SEAFOOD.COM NEWS by Ken Coons - March 25, 2003
As part of its effort to offset continuing PR
assaults on net pen salmon farming, the BC Salmon
Farmers Association has launched its 'Aquaculture
Feeds Families' cards, an aquaculture awareness
initiative designed to increase the public's
awareness of the significant economic contribution
BC's coastal communities make to the rest of the
province and Canada.
'The purpose of the program is to spread the word
that aquaculture is in fact feeding our families,'
said Mary Ellen Walling, Executive Director of the
BCSFA. 'All of us want to live and work in coastal
BC and we would not be able to do so without an
environmentally sustainable industry such as
salmon farming. This is an opportunity for us to
show our pride in our industry and our
communities.'
The core element of this program are 20,000 +
'Aquaculture Feeds Families' pocket-sized cards
which will be distributed to BCSFA members
companies and their employees this week. The cards
will be sent along with checks mailed to suppliers
and will be handed out by individuals involved
with aquaculture every time they make a purchase.
Included on the 'Aquaculture Feeds Families' cards
are some facts about salmon and the opportunity to
register for a chance to win prizes.
According to the association, salmon farming makes
it possible for more than 4,700 men and women to
live and work in coastal British Columbia. Farm
raised salmon is British Columbia's most
significant agricultural export, and the industry
returns over $600 million to the province's
economy each year. |
