Maori Criticize
Goverment's Aquaculture Meetings, Want Rights to
Aquaculture revenues |

SEAFOOD.COM NEWS [The New Zealand Herald] - May 14,
2003
Hui organised by the Government to consult Maori on
impending aquaculture industry legislation have been
attacked as a waste of time.
Despite being offered an 'intervention clause' -
proposed by the Government as an answer to the iwi
claims - Maori Working Group spokesman and former
politician Tu Wyllie was yesterday unswerving in his
criticism of the process.
He will meet aquaculture representatives today to
discuss how they will push the Government to satisfy
the claims before legislation is drafted in the next
couple of months.
The Maori claimants, who are riding on the back of a
sympathetic Waitangi Tribunal report, want access to
at least 20 per cent of new aquaculture marine areas
as satisfaction of rights under the Treaty of
Waitangi.
The tribunal report found the Government's aquaculture
reform package breached four principles of the treaty
and had insufficient regard to Maori interests.
Wyllie said the the hui told Maori only what they
already knew.
The Government was just going through the motions and
did not propose a forum for negotiation of the claims.
'Consultation is fine but we need negotiation. |
