 Growfish LOCAL ROUNDUP
  GAIN well represented in China
Tony McLennan, Gippsland Aquaculture Industry Network's (GAIN) chairman has just reported from Hong Kong that his current visit to China has been a great opportunity to renew the relations commenced last year with Jiangsu Department of Ocean Fisheries.
GAIN was invited to make a presentation at the International Agricultural Symposium & Project Promotional

Tony Mclennan
GAIN Chairman

Exposition, AGRIEXPO 2002 in Jiangsu Province 21st-26th October 2002 in Yangzhou City. As guest of the Mayor of Yangzhou and the Ocean & Fisheries Bureau, Yangzhou Province, Tony has had the unique opportunity to visit many aquaculture projects in the Province including a large crab breeding development and a Jade Perch (Barcoo grunter) growout project.
He has also taken the opportunity to visit Taizhou, the sister city of the Latrobe City where he visited aquaculture projects and received similar VIP treatment. The trip has been a great opportunity to renew the relationships with Jiangsu Province and lay the basis for future cooperation and mutual assistance in the aquaculture industry. A full report of the visit will be featured on the website upon Tony's return and in the November edition of the Growfish newsletter.

Getting Youth into Aquaculture
Yarram youth business proposal looks at aquaculture.
29th October
Yarram and District Health Service have launched a community project called the Youth Enterprise Project (YEP) supported with funding from State and Federal Governments.
The project aims at giving the local youth an opportunity to establish a self sustaining local

business that will offer long term employment and contribute to the economy of the district. Three ideas have emerged after considerable analysis by the committee headed by Fiona Miller they include gourmet rabbit breeding, yabby growing and hemp growing.
The Gippsland Yabby Growers Association,
whom are members of GAIN, have been assisting with information and farm inspections during the process of investigation and will be offering on-going support as the project gets under way.
It is proposed to commence with 10-15 local young people and offer skills and business training while setting up the best operating format to establish the business.
The initial thoughts are to operate under the multi-water licence system and establish a central depot/hatchery while exploring some intense farming ideas.

 GROWfish exceeds all expectations
The success of the Gippsland Aquaculture Industry Network (GAIN) website known as GROWfish

has exceeded all expectations of GAIN members and the Industry in general. GAIN Chairman, Tony Mclennan recently said, "We started with a vision to promote and develop resources for the Gippsland Aquaculture Industry Sector, and to achieve the results that we are seeing on a worldwide scale has been amazing". He also added that, " This clearly demonstrates the momentum being gained within the Aquaculture Industry overall and the fact that people from around the world including Governments are recognizing the need for long term sustainable Aquaculture development".

Cate Bell (GAIN Secretary) reported at the September meeting  that the membership levels have already exceeded the targets set for 2002/2003 and continues to grow.

In March this year the GAIN Executive Committee reviewed the ongoing development and promotional strategies of the Growfish website and felt that to achieve the desired results a significant change in direction and policy was required. Warren Key, an Executive Committee member and local Information Technology Consultant was appointed as Webmaster and tasked with reviewing strategies and the future development of the site.

In March 2002 the site was getting around 2000 hits (page impressions) per month. In September we achieved just over 80,000 and expect to achieve 100,000 hits per month by Christmas. We now have over 2000 newsletter subscribers and this number is growing daily as site popularity continues to increase. Approximately 40 percent of these subscribers are from Australia with the balance being from numerous overseas countries. In September we had visitors from 61 countries. This led us to increase the language translation facilities from 8 languages to 25.

There have been a number of new features added lately to improve the resources provided by the Growfish Website and there are a number of further facilities to be implemented.
New features include: forums, free link directories and additional language translation facilities. New facilities planned for the near future include: a free classifieds section, members area and automation of our news stories to provide an increased number of articles and resource information. We also will continue to build up the reference information available on the site.
