Editor's Update
3rd March 2003
GROWFISH GOES HI -TECH
A year ago none of the members of GAIN would have dreamed that the Growfish website would achieve the popularity that it has. The site has undergone three distinct upgrades since it's original launch and we are once again at a point where we have had to reconsider the many issues surrounding the maintenance and management of the site. A monthly hit rate of 80 - 110,000 plus a constant flow of information and inquiry has led us to consider implementation of a complete new backend and management infrastructure. We are currently finalising the introduction of a complete Portal system for the Growfish website. The new software will allow us to have a number of content editors and administrators and will include numerous new features for users. In addition to the new management tools some of the user features include: member site registration, who's online, link rating & ranking, new/hot/popular, user listing & content submission, ad tracking for advertisers, ecommerce, discussion forums, events calendar with event registration, surveys & polls, classified ads sections, chat & conference facilities, automated newsletter signup and more news & articles. Further information and a release date will be advised shortly. webmaster@growfish.com.au

MANAGING YABBIES FOR PROFIT
The first one day Yabby course has been run in conjunction with the FarmBis program at Morwell by course convenor Tony Cohen from East Vic Yabbies. The participants were a mix of Gippsland Yabby Grower Association members and independent parties interested in the potential of yabby farming. The aims of the course were to generate interest in the profitable production of yabbies, to investigate the importance and implications of producing critical mass to meet existing demands for yabbies and to understand the importance of best practices in the growing and handling of yabbies for these markets.

David Morrison & Tony Cohen
discuss the finer points of water
parameters for growing yabbies.

A range of aids were used including live yabbies, microscopes, videos, nets, water testing equipment etc and handouts included a very comprehensive yabby growers manual and relevant licensing information and forms. Considerable discussion took place which showed the importance and need for such a course and the general feeling was the day proved to be a resounding success.
Inquiries about further courses can be directed to Tony Cohen, email address: tony.cohen@growfish.com.au
