Insurance cover for fish farmers
Fish farmers would be given insurance cover under the Matsya Keralam project with a view to increasing inland fish production to two lakh tonnes in three years, said Fisheries Minister S Sarma.
Speaking at the state-level inauguration of the second phase of Matsya Keralam project here on Monday, he said the premium amount of the insurance scheme of the fish farmers would be paid by the State Government. As part of the second phase of the scheme, fish farming would be conducted in 10,000 hectares, he said.
“Though we have sufficient resources, inland fish production in the State is lower than the country’s average.
Though Kerala stood first in fish export, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh are way ahead in freshwater fish production,” he said.
Stating that fish farming clubs had been formed in 780 panchayats, he said training would be given to fish farmers and an award would be instituted for the best fish farmer.
Cooperation Minister G Sudhakaran presided over the function.
District Collector Mini Antony, District panchayat president R Nasser and Municipal chairman P P Chitharanjan attended the function.
