Prawn alternatives target of upgraded research facility

National Marine Science Centre’s aquaculture facilities in northern NSW have been upgraded to commercial hatchery and research standards.

The Federal Government's Sustainable Regions Program is funding the new North Coast Mariculture and Re-seeding Centre located at the northern coast city of Coffs Harbour.

Professor Alistair McIlgorm, the centre's director, announced the centre will focus on research into the commercial potential of mulloway and opportunities for the north coast prawn industry.

"We're working with the prawn farmers in the Yamba area to actually help them to replace prawns, in that basically cheap imports have made prawns less viable and they're looked for new diversifed opportunities," he was reported as having said.
