Authorities in southern hub Ho Chi Minh City on July 15 officially set up an association for local breeders of ornamental fish in a move to strengthen and transform the fish breeding industry.
Ornamental fish breeding is a spearhead industry that is suitable for farmers in the city, especially suburban areas, local agriculture |
officials said at the opening ceremony of the HCMC Ornamental Fish Association.
“Currently, local ornamental fish breeders are making good profits, and the business is stable,” said officials.
The city recently decided to use all its low-efficiency rice growing areas to grow other plants and breed livestock and ornamental fish breeding on the top of its list.
Roles
Officials said the establishment of the association would help local breeders and breeding villages improve business competitiveness and efficiency.
The association was very necessary and a step towards major economic restructuring of the business in the city, officials said.
With the emergence of the association, ornamental fish breeding in the city will be reorganized and no longer a small-scale and separate operation like before, breeders said.
Targets
The association said its first plans were to build breeding villages in suitable areas in the city.
It also aims to establish ornamental fish supermarkets to offer breeders opportunities to display and introduce their products.
Fish trading streets in city downtown and areas around HCMC International Tan Son Nhat Airport will also be set up, said the association.
We will consolidate efforts to increase the city’s ornamental fish exports by tenfold to 40-50 million USD, it added.
