Fisheries gives 3 million fish seeds to Balochistan

The Punjab Fisheries Department (PFD) has given three million fish seeds to Balochistan at a subsidized rate for fish farming development on the Punjab chief minister’s directive.

PFD Director General Dr Muhammad Ayub said that the department was helping the other provinces and Azad Jammu and
Kashmir in this regard. The Balochistan government paid the amount in advance and two million fish eggs were sent from Rawalpindi, he said, adding that the remaining were sent from Bahwalpur to Quetta. He said that Pakistan International Airlines had also helped in sending the seeds for the promotion of fisheries in the private sector, particularly in underdeveloped areas.

He said that Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Muhammad Yousaf was grateful to his counterpart in
Punjab for providing the eggs to meet the increasing demand for quality fish seeds.

Ayub said that eggs for fish species including rahu, mori, thaila, grass carp, silver carp, big head carp and gulfam were being produced through artificial breeding.

He said that seeds were being released in fresh water to replenish the fish stock and Fisheries Minister Jam Muhammad Hashim wanted to increase artificial breeding because of its economic importance. He said that Hashim had directed that facilities for free soil and water analysis be provided to fish farmers. The director general said that fish hatcheries in the province were being upgraded to produce better quality fish eggs. Disease resistant fish seed were being provided to people at subsidised rates for the promotion of fish farming in the private sector, he added.

He said that a new fish hatchery, covering more than 30 acres, was being established in Rahim Yar Khan. app
