Sarangani to host aquaculture expo



The Sarangani Provincial Government will host this year's 3rd Aquaculture exposition slated for November 24 to 26.



Preparations for the aquaculture exhibit are spearheaded by the Chamber of Aquaculture and Ancillary Industries in Sarangani (Chains) in coordination with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of Agriculture.



The exposition will also coincide with the 12th Foundation anniversary of Sarangani.



Sarangani Gov. Miguel Dominguez, who was the first president of Chains, said prospects are bright for Sarangani to become the aquaculture center in Mindanao.



Sarangani hosts several, bangus, tilapia and prawn farms.



In addition, the Sarangani Agricultural Corporation Inc. is pioneering the fish cage technology where lapu-lapu (grouper), sea bass and pompano are being cultured.



DTI provincial director Nanette Barroso said industry executives, suppliers and aquaculture experts are expected to troop to Sarangani later this month for the 3rd Aquaculture Industry Congress.



She said they have successfully negotiated with Quedancor for financing of small-scale aquaculture projects through non-collateral loans.



The DTI official likewise said prospects are bright for fisher folks and farmers to venture into the seaweed industry.



Barroso said during the Mindanao Biz Talk show that a seaweed processing plant would soon open in Davao City, which will make seaweed farming a lucrative livelihood endeavor.



Neil Cachuela of the Growth with Equity in Mindanao also assured continued technical support for aquaculture farming including improving quality and business matching.



Meanwhile, the DTI office here also announced several activities that have been lined up during the exposition period.



A gamefishing competition will be held at Isla Parilla on November 24.



The competition is open to all enthusiasts.



A culinary art competition for professional and amateurs will also be held later this month.
