R & D projects in organic aquaculture
Naturland eV, a certifier of organic products accredited by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM), and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA)/National Organic Programme (NOP), in cooperation with the Coop Naturaplan Fund, are initiating two R & D programmes in the field of organic aquaculture.
Coop Naturaplan is the organic flagship label of Coop supermarket stores in Switzerland. The Naturaplan label stands for organically produced food as well as meat and eggs from humane animal husbandry with access to free range. The two R & D programmes are:
ˇ Processing of organic aquaculture products; and
ˇ Natural antioxidants in fishmeal/fish oil for organic aquaculture feeds.
The programme is for companies or institutions who are engaged in R & D related to seafood processing and is aimed at identifying alternative solutions for technical needs that are consumer friendly, non-polluting, and safeguarding premium quality in fin and shell fish.
The objective of the programme in seafood processing would be to identify an alternative substance or technique to replace metabisulphite in shrimp processing and to work without or with minimum chlorination of process water, while in the second programme, R & D efforts would be made to identify an alternative substance or technique to replace chemical antioxidants in fishmeal and fish oil production. Companies or institutions active in R & D related to seafood processing and aqua feeds which are interested to participate in this programme can contact Dr Stefan Bergleiter, Naturland (E-mail: S.Bergleiter@Naturland.de) |
