Taiwan promotes world's first fish ID system

Ran Fanhua, an aquaculture assistant at National Taiwan Ocean University, and Chen Xiunan, professor of biotechnology at National Taiwan University, have joined hands with researchers from five universities to provide direction for the world's first "Fish ID" system, established by aquaculture firms in Taiwan.

The plan has gained recognition by Taiwan's GAP and the EU's HACCP, and the first lot of haili fish with IDs will be shipped to Italy on the 20th. The selling price of these fish may rise from the former NT$200 or NT$300 per kilo to between NT$600 and NT$700.

The system of adding serial numbers as a sort of "ID" is generally used today on flowers and agricultural products, but
Taiwan is the first country to apply it to aquaculture products. The Tianhe Marine Company, links up the forces of students and teachers at National Taiwan University, National Taiwan Ocean University, Pingdong University of Technology, Zhongshan University and the Penghu Institute of Technology to successfully complete the project. The system will be actively promoted among Taiwan's domestic aquaculture industry.
