A total of 52,459 ponds in 10 south-western districts of the country have been lying unutilised for a long time.
Lack of proper planning, running capital and wrangling over ownership, affecting the regions fish output.
Officials said that 93,500 mounds of fishes worth about Tk. 27.25 crore could be produced annually by bringing these ponds under fish farming.
Of the abandoned ponds 6,375 are in Jessore district, 4,692 in Magura district, 13,432 in Jhenidah district, 6,900 in Kushtia district, 3,000 in Chuadanga district, 4,067 in Meherpur district, 480 in Bagerhat district, 4,000 in Satkhira district, 3,513 in Narail district and 6,000 in Khulna district.
As per the existing law, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) or the Executive Officer concerned can issue notice to the owners of abandoned ponds to bring those under fish farming after proper re-excavation. The law also says that the authority can declare any pond abandoned and lease it out for over 20 years if the pond's owner fails to cultivate fish in it with in the deadline.
